1. Who can purchase a permit?

Those who can purchase a permit include:

• Owner of a building within the Business Improvement District (allowed 1 permit per year)
• Tenants renting in the general area (allowed 1 permit per year)
• Overnight permits will be tied to a valid license plate number

2. Where can I park?

Any of the following overnight parking lots can be used on a first come/first serve basis.

• Lot 1 (409 Wilson Avenue) - 46 spots
• Lot 3 (406 Wilson Avenue, located south side of lot) - 11 spots
• Lot 9 (720 Main Street) - 22 spots
• Lot 11 (602 2nd Street West) - 3 spots

3. How does the new system work?

The overnight parking permits will be issued on a first come first service basis. Once the spots are rented, you are welcome to call back and check for openings.

Once you have paid for the permit, you will be given a permit to be displayed in your vehicle; no refunds.

To guarantee your spot for next quarter/year, you will be required to renew the permit within 3 business days after expiration.

Please renew your permit, or risk losing the spot.

Please remember, these permits can not be resold to anyone else.  Violators will lose the right to a permit.

1. What is Home Sweet Menomonie?

Home Sweet Menomonie is a City of Menomonie Program in partnership with the Community Foundation of Dunn County.  Home Sweet Menomonie combines public, employer, and private contributions to create a no-interest, partially forgivable loan for down payment assistance to employees of participating businesses who wish to own homes within the City of Menomonie.

3. How does it work?

• The Home Sweet Menomonie loan program can provide you up to $10,000, amortized over a flexible schedule (likely 10 years)
• It is a zero-interest repayable loan
• The last year’s scheduled payment may be forgiven if you have made documented improvements to your home such as physical repairs or upgrades.
• Loans are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. 
• To apply, eligible employees complete and submit an application with the City of Menomonie
• The only criteria is that you are an employee at a participating employer and be in the process of buying a house

1. Why does a fire truck show up to an EMS call?

Our ambulances are staffed with 2 personnel, and depending on the nature and complexity of the EMS call, additional personnel may be needed to expedite the treatment and transport of the patient.

2. Does the Menomonie Fire Department fill swimming pools?

The Menomonie Fire Department does not provide this service. Persons requiring this service should contact a local milk hauler.

3. I have questions regarding my ambulance bill. Who can I speak with?

4. Does the Menomonie Fire Department offer CPR education?

Presently the Menomonie Fire Department does not offer CPR education. Interested persons should contact the local Red Cross Office at 715-235-3700 or Chippewa Valley Technical College for this training.

5. What are the City's rules on fireworks?

Wisconsin State Statute 167.10 pertains to fireworks and are the same regulations the City goes by. City ordinance for fireworks can be found in City Ordinances 5-1-3 Offenses Against Public Safety.

1. What do I do if my sewer backs up?

• Call the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 715-232-2175 during business hours (6:30 am - 3:00 pm). After hours, weekends and holidays call 715-232-1283 and we will be contacted.
• City staff will check out the sewer main line and inform you if the blockage is in the City's main sewer or if it is in your private pipe from your building to the sewer main (lateral).
• In the case of the private pipe (lateral) from your building to the sewer main, the City is not responsible and we will inform you of that.

2. Will my homeowners insurance cover damage from sewer backups?

Probably not unless your policy specifically covers sewers, sumps and drains. It is a good idea to contact your insurance company if you do not know if you have this coverage.

3. Why do I smell sewer gas in my dwelling?

All drains and fixtures in a dwelling are supposed to be hooked to a vent pipe that extends up through the roof to expel back pressure in your plumbing system. Drains are protected from gas escaping into a dwelling by a "gooseneck" or water trap in the drain. This is true for floor drains, sinks, and toilets. If this water in the trap evaporates because of extended non-use, the gas can escape into the dwelling. A simple solution is to add water to that drain and any drain which is not used that often. If this does not solve the problem, it would be a good idea to have your venting system inspected.

4. Is it OK to flush "flushable" wipes?

No. Flushing any type of wipes, even if labeled as "flushable", may cause the pipes to clog and raw sewage to back up into your home or business. Toilet paper is the only paper product that should be flushed.

5. The water in my toilet just sprayed into the air and made a mess. What's going on here?

The sewer utility crews use a high-pressure jet of water to clean the sanitary sewers in the street. The sewer system in your home or business is vented through a pipe that runs up through your walls and out your roof. This venting system is designed to relieve pressure in the sewer system so gases in the piping come out through the pipe in your roof, and not through your toilet or drains. If this is what is occurring, then your venting system may be plugged. sometimes this is caused by birds or squirrels building a nest in the vent pipe on your roof. It would be a good idea to have your plumbing system inspected.

6. Where can I dump the holding tank on my RV?

There is an RV and Septic dumping site at the intersection of Wilson Avenue W and River Road. It is in the parking lot next to the big blue tanks. There is no charge for RV waste.

7. Can I put anti-freeze or motor oil down the drain?

Do not dispose of your used anti-freeze or motor oil down the sewer. The sewer use ordinance also prohibits the dumping of such material down the drain. The City Solid Waste Site accepts used motor oil from City residents during their normal open hours. Anti-freeze is accepted during the City's annual Clean Sweep Hazardous Waste collection event.

1. How do I request a solid waste permit?

City of Menomonie solid waste permits are available to City residents only. You can request a solid waste permit online or fill out a form at the City Solid Waste Site. Permits are mailed out once a week so you should receive your permit within a week or two of your request. The only information you need to fill out the request form is your name, email address (if you have one) and mailing address. No proof of residency is required. 

2. I live outside the city limits, can I purchase a permit to use the City Solid Waste Site?

No, the City does not sell permits to out of city residents. The City Solid Waste Site is for City resident use only.

3. What items are accepted at the solid waste site?

The Solid Waste Site accepts the following items:

4. Where can I dispose of construction materials?

Construction waste (lumber, sheet rock, carpeting, etc) is not accepted at the City Solid Waste Site. There are three options for properly disposing of construction waste:

5. Does the City offer curbside trash and recycling pickup?

No, the City does not pick up trash and recycling curbside. There are several haulers who pickup trash and recycling curbside in the City of Menomonie. Residents can choose which hauler they would like to use. The City pays for the curbside recycling service but residents are responsible for the curbside trash fee. Alternatively, the City Solid Waste Site allows City residents to drop off trash and recycling.

6. Does the city pickup yard waste?

The City Community Services department picks up yard waste and brush curbside for selected dates in the spring and fall. These are typically 3 or 4 Mondays in the spring and 3 or 4 Mondays in the fall. The City Solid Waste Site accepts yard waste and brush for free year-round during their regular open hours. 

7. What do I do with latex paint?

Latex paint can be safely thrown away in the regular household trash once it is dry. Latex paint can be dried up by opening the container and allowing to air dry or mix in materials (kitty litter, sawdust, shredded paper, etc) to accelerate the hardening. Once it is hard, throw the lid and the paint can in the trash.

8. Does the City Solid Waste Site accept electronics?

The City Solid Waste Site does not accept electronics. Electronics can be recycled at First Choice Recycling in Eau Claire.

1. What should I do if I see water coming up in the street or in my yard?

• Contact the Water Department immediately. If outside of business hours, please contact the dispatch line at 715-232-1283.

2. What should I do if I have discolored water?

• Let the water settle down for a half hour or so
• Flush the line by running cold water through a faucet
• If still dirty, contact the Water Department

3. Why does the Water Department flush water mains?

The Water Department flushes water mains to remove sediments from the mains. This helps maintain the pipes and keep them clean. It is reccomended that residents run cold water, preferably through a garden hose, for a few minutes after flushing has occurred to prevent any loose sediment from entering your internal plumbing.
